Kentucky speaker to talk on SE about self-control

By — Jeremy Moore

SE Campus’ behavioral and social science department will host a speech by University of Kentucky social psychology lab director Nathan DeWall.

DeWall will speak on self-control, which he believes is an important part of life.

“Albert Einstein, Sally Ride, Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, Martin Luther King, Jr. or the Beatles — we place these people on pedestals because they share a common human strength: self-control,” he said in a press release.

DeWall says he will provide useful teaching activities that will challenge students to reconsider factors that contribute to their academic, personal and relationship success.

“First, I will define self-control and make a case for its role in personal, relationship and societal well-being,” DeWall said.

“Second, I will discuss how self-control relies on a limited energy resource that becomes depleted after prior use. Third, I will demonstrate the interplay between self-control, personality, biological and social processes.”

SE psychology associate professor Karl Robinson is looking forward to DeWall’s speech.

“Self-control can be applied to everyday life,” he said. “I am hoping that a lot of people come out. Mr. DeWall is a great speaker.”

The speech will take place at 1 p.m. March 21 in the North Ballroom.
