Read Me, a series of works by artist Candace Hicks, is on display in Art Corridor II on SE Campus through April 22.
The exhibit consists of a collection of mirage sculptures and wall texts that make up a life-sized puzzle book.
“Viewers solve the clues to find the solution to the puzzle while being immersed in the story,” Hicks said in a press release. “A tiny line of text connects all the pieces and carries the narrative
forward. Clues are embedded in the optical illusions and woven into the text.”
Hicks gets the ideas for her art from reading different books. She looks for coincidences from books she reads, assembles them in her artist books and puts them in her installments.
She hopes the exhibit will intrigue audience members.
“I think it will be very thought-provoking,” she said. “The show encourages social enjoyment, so hopefully people will work together.”
Hicks says that Read Me was inspired by games such as Device 6, which is a text-based adventure game that consists of pictures, sounds and texts that take the player through a series of puzzles.
“I played adventure games as a kid and now my son is into them,” she said. “I wanted to take things from these types of video games and use them as art.”
SE instructional associate Christopher Blay, who is curating the exhibit, said after he saw the exhibit in Houston, he knew he wanted to do this show.
“I thought that it could interact with not only art students but students that are studying math, science, theater and literature since it has all of these elements,” he said. “The art engages people on a level that’s different. It’s interactive, so they have to read the text in the show and look for clues about the meaning of the work.”
The exhibit is on display in Art Corridor II and is available during campus operating hours Monday through Saturday.
