Leadership and success go hand in hand, NE students were told March 24.

Janice Bryant Howroyd, CEO of the largest woman-owned U.S. employment agency, discussed ways to create success in a global marketplace, diversify skills and get noticed by companies.

“Education is your key to freedom,” she said.

People should always have a plan of action when looking for a career, Howroyd said. Students must create timelines and action goals. It is essential to be committed to timelines and goals.

“Goals without timelines are wishes,” she said.

Written goals need to be put into action.

It is crucial for students to create a resume that can describe them and the value they bring to the employer. If students have a presence on social media, future employers will check before an interview, Howroyd said.

Researching the company’s background gives students significant knowledge about the employer before applying, Howroyd said. In addition, good references and contacts are important for recommendations.

“A resume has to be written for every potential employer you see,” she said.

When finding a job, it can be frustrating but adventurous. Howroyd said it’s not uncommon to send a resume out over 100 times.

“Never compromise who you are personally to become who you wish to be professionally,” she said.

No matter who signs your check, you write it, Howroyd said.
