The presidential election and voting process are the focus of Elections Explained, part of South’s Constitution Day celebration Sept. 19.
Members of the social sciences department including government associate professor Madelyn Bowman will explain the Electoral College and each political party’s platform during a lecture-style presentation.
“We are going to make our way through the platforms of the four major parties: Democratic Party, Republican Party, Libertarian and Green Party,” she said. “We’re just going to explain without any political color, hopefully, what the platforms are. Then we are going to talk about the election process.”
While Bowman said everyone can benefit from the presentation, she is looking forward to what the students can gain.
“I am excited about the prospect of students being about to register to vote and being aware of political platforms because there is not a lot of time in class to go in-depth into what the platform says,” she said. “So, I like the fact that students will at least be exposed to it and hear it.”
Student development associate Ana Garcia said the presentation will also take an in-depth look at voting.
“They’re going to talk about what the Constitution says regarding the presidential election,” she said.
Garcia said they will describe the current Electoral College.
“Then they’ll do myths surrounding the presidential election,” she said.
“So it’s going to be everything that goes with voting.”
The presentation is 1-3 p.m. in the SSTU Dining Hall. Deputized students will be available to help attendees register to vote.
