NW dancing to support abuse victims

By Alexis Poe

Dancing with the Stars fans have a chance to be a part of the action on NW.

The NW Dance Club is sponsoring its own Dancing with the TCC Stars competition to raise funds for the Assessment Center of Tarrant County, a safe haven from domestic abuse for children up to 17 years old.

NW dance associate professor Amy Sleigh will pair up couples and choreograph original dances for them to perform.

The couples are then mentored by dance students honing their skills.

Three judges will select the winner based on performance, timing, music, professionalism and appearance.

“What I love about dance is that it’s everything,” Sleigh said. “It’s math, physics, language, art and expressing all of that through motion.”

The Assessment Center of Tarrant County is one of 40 programs run by Catholic Charities Fort Worth.

“Our goal is to end poverty,” said Amanda Cowart, senior associate director of fund development at Catholic Charities Fort Worth.

The money raised at the NW event will be used to buy Christmas presents for the children at the Assessment Center.

Interested dancers still have time to register, Sleigh said. They can contact her at 817-515-7174 or at amy.sleigh@tccd.edu for more details.

“Get out of your square box and dance,” Sleigh said.

The event will take place at noon Nov. 10 in WSTU 1303. Admission is by donation.
