After a tiebreaker, student Jacob Hernandez won the NW three-point basketball shootout Nov. 30.
Competing against nine other contestants, Hernandez found himself tied with Lazarius Robinson at 10 shots made.
The two students would compete in two tiebreaker rounds to crown the winner of the shootout. They would tie at 10 shots again in the first round, but Hernandez took the second round with six shots to Robinson’s four.
The three-point shootout was followed by a best-of-three, five-on-five tournament with the first team scoring 21 declared the winner.
The Home Team, led by Hernandez, took the series by winning back-to-back games, 22-18 and 21-15, respectively.
NW intramural director Aaron Garcia officiated both the shootout and the five-on-five game.
“This event had a much better turnout than the last basketball event we held here,” he said. “It was on a Saturday, and only two people showed up. Holding an event today, we got a lot of the regulars here to participate and a couple of students outside of that.”
One of the regulars, NW student Daniel Carrasco, found out about the shootout when he visited the gym that day.
“Basketball is a stress reliever for me,” he said. “I come here often. I walked in, and they said, ‘Hey, we are having a basketball shootout.’ I really enjoyed it.”
Many of the students seemed excited as everyone was given a medal and a commemorative towel for participation.
NW student Khaila Davis, who played on the Away Team, aims to get better on his game.
“I had fun, but I am a little rusty,” he said. “I was moving like I was in quicksand. Time to hit the gym.”
