South Campus is kicking off the Year of the Rooster with lion dancers and martial arts performances as part of its annual Chinese New Year celebration Jan. 31.

J.K. Wong Kung Fu Tai Chi Academy will perform several times, student activities coordinator Ana Garcia said.

“They are bringing their drum group and lion dancers, and they are going to be doing a kung fu exhibit,” she said. “I am looking forward to the lion dancers. They are always fun and engaging.”

Traditional Chinese food will be served, Garcia said.

“I thought that that was important to try to be culturally aware that Chinese food is not just fried rice,” she said.

Senior office assistant Amanda Sims said the celebration will also include a presentation by the Korean Interest Association on how Koreans celebrate the Chinese New Year.

“They are students that have in the past been a part of the anime organization, and I am just excited to see students present something that they know a lot about,” she said.

The celebration will be 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the SSTU Dining Hall. For more information, contact student activities at 817-515-4045.
