Muhammad Ali was a sports legend and later in life was an activist for persons with Parkinson’s disease. Screenings will occur in the Idea Store Theater at 9 a.m., noon and 2:45 p.m.

Jason Shelton, director of the Center for African American Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington, will trace the historical ideological debates among Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, W.E.B. Dubois, Marcus Garvey and many others.

Feb. 1 South Campus will hold a kickoff event 12:30-2 p.m. in the SSTU Dining Hall. Students can watch a cultural performance and learn about upcoming events.

Feb. 9 Richard Selcer will discuss his book, A History of Fort Worth in Black & White: 165 Years of African-American Life. Selcer has taught and written history for 40 years both internationally and throughout the DFW metroplex. The event will be held 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the TR Tahita Fulkerson Library (TREF 2105).

Feb. 10 South Campus will host the 11th annual Ariel Hunter-Chriss African American Professionals Conference 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Student Center. The conference will teach leadership strategies and offer tools for business professionals and community leaders. Registration is $49. Lunch is included. Feb. 15 TR students can participate in Black History Month trivia noon-1 p.m. at the Riverfront Cafe. Sign-up begins at 11:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded.

Feb. 16 SE student activities will hold Setting the Record Straight: Debunking Misconceptions about Africans and the [Not So] Dark Continent, presented by Brad Borougerdi 10-11:20 a.m. in the library classroom. For more information, contact student activities at 817-515-3595.

Feb. 17 TR Campus will sponsor a Historic Fort Worth Bus Tour 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., which will visit various locations central to the African-American experience in Fort Worth’s past. The tour will be led by Sarah Walker, Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Society president. Admission is free to all TCC students, faculty and staff. An RSVP and waiver are required. Feb. 23 A Blue Texas book discussion will occur noon-1 p.m. in the TR Tahita Fulkerson Library (TREF 2105). Author Max Krochmal chronicles the past struggles for marginalized minorities who came together to seek empowerment through demands for integration, economic justice and other social justice issues central to the civil rights movement.

Feb. 23 NW will host a Black History Month celebration 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the WSTU building. The event will include drummers, dance performers, food and games. For more information, email student activities coordinator Rachael McCloskey at rachael.mccloskey@tccd.edu.
