Students can watch South Campus’ jazz bands perform in downtown Fort Worth for free.

The bands will be one of several acts to perform at the Live Oak Music Hall 7-10 p.m. on April 25.

This will be the second time this semester South’s jazz bands will perform at the venue.

“It was excellent,” said student Fred Marinco on the bands’ last outing. “I mean it was packed. We had a standing room only crowd. It is a broadening experience for students to enjoy.”

Marinco is 74 years old and has performed for a while. A number of older students participate in the class along with younger ones.

Their presence has influenced 18-year-old George Covarrubias.

“Some of them have been playing for 50-plus years,” Covarrubias said. “It was pretty hard to catch up with them at first. They are kind of rubbing off on me when it comes to their playing skills.”

South music instructor Rick Stitzel says the Live Oak loves the student performances.

“We found this club in downtown Fort Worth that enjoys us,” Stitzel said. “The club gives them a real-world experience of playing in a real jazz club.”
