Students can watch Sunday on the Rocks, a play about the challenges in the lives of four women, April 13-15 on South Campus.
The two-act play follows the lives of roommates Elly, Gayle, Jessica and Jen.
After discovering Elly drinking scotch on a Sunday morning, the other girls decide to join her. During their early morning drink, the girls find themselves trying to make sense of their lives.
“Life is complicated. There are rarely any easy answers to the big questions,” said play director and theater instructor Richard Haratine. “They are usually very complicated.”
Elly, portrayed by Shyanne Hammel, is dealing with a pregnancy by a man she does not love. Hope Rosser’s character, Gayle, is trying to find her place in life.
Jen, portrayed by Victoria Nearn, is being harassed by an obsessive colleague. They all stay with Jessica, played by Kristen Clay, a conservative woman who has little to no compassion for her roommates.
The cast and Haratine say the play is a slice of life everybody can relate to.
“There are still a lot of issues that a lot of people on the campus are dealing with,” Hammel said “They are the kind of things that are universal. For me, it is nice to see that other people are going through the same crap that I am going through.”
Hammel describes Elly as “outspoken” and “crazy but a sensible crazy.” Elly is one to stand up for her friends while Jessica is reserved and conservative.
“If you do not conform to her ideas of what is right, then you are wrong,” Clay said. “She is very much the perfect Catholic. Well, she thinks she is.”
The play will be in the Joe B. Rushing Performing Arts Center April 13-15 starting at 7:30 p.m. Admission for non-TCC students and senior citizens is $3, general public is $6 and TCC students, faculty and staff attend for free. No late entry is allowed. Tickets go on sale at the box office 30 minutes before showtime.
