South Campus’ newly established business organization, Beta Psi, will be chartered at 3 p.m. April 20 in the SSTU Living Room.
Beta Psi is part of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, known for helping students in leadership, entrepreneurship and technology training.
“It is a very historical organization,” South continuing education services director Alisa Jones said. “We have started with 11 college students, and it is open for both men and women.”
Beta Psi is the branch targeted toward collegiate students studying business. Jones said the school decided to charter the club at the request of board member Gwen Morrison.
“Beta Psi will offer an opportunity for students to gain professional work skills while in school,” Morrison said. “In Beta Psi, members support each other, and it will help students in their move into professional life.”
Beta Psi also has already participated in a few charity events.
“We have an event scheduled for next Saturday where we feed the homeless,” Jones said. “The members are also involved in planning the national convention this summer that will be in Fort Worth.”
Jones said that students participating in Beta Psi will be exposed to a group of prominent, professional women in the city and will provide students with networking opportunities. Jones said the club will be represented at TCC’s next board meeting in hopes that other campus presidents will consider adding a chapter on their campuses.
“While in school, students gain the work skills needed to succeed in the workforce,” Beta Psi president Charlicia Dawes said. “Students can gain public speaking skills, experience and mentorship through members of the organization.”
Dawes said the club will provide a direct link from school to the workforce. Students who would like to join Beta Psi can find its link on Blackboard.
