Near the 42nd anniversary of the fall of Saigon, South students can hear keynote speakers and members of the South Vietnamese community discuss the Vietnam War from beginning to end.
South‘s social sciences department will host Vietnam: The Struggle for Freedom and Democracy 8 a.m.-4 p.m. April 29 in the SETC Fusion Auditorium.
“It is a joint event with TCC and Tarrant County’s South Vietnamese community, which is the third largest Vietnamese community in the country,” history professor Lee Snaples said. “We will also discuss what has happened to the immigrants and community since 1975.”
History assistant professor Brian Johnson said the symposium will provide a way of understanding the war from the South Vietnamese refugee perspective.
“Most of the information students have gotten on the war is from the North Vietnamese perspective,” marketing representative Nhi Bui said. “Students will see the war from the perspective of the South, the ones who have been through it.”
The symposium will feature three panels that will discuss the beginning of the war, the end of the war and America’s involvement in the war. The last panel will feature Geoffrey Shaw, author of The Lost Mandate of Heaven, who will reveal facts about the war based on his research.
“Is the war over?” Johnson asked. “Vietnam is still fighting for freedom and democracy.”
