With summer break fast approaching, students and faculty are deciding how to spend nearly four months off.
While most students anticipate going on vacations, taking road trips or catching some rays by the pool, South Campus student body president Jarod Bohon has something else up his sleeve.
“I will be proposing to my girlfriend, May, whom I have been with for almost three years now,” he said.
The couple have known each other for 14 years, but since her father is due for a visit, Bohon thought it would be appropriate to propose while he was in town.
“He is from Saudi Arabia and is very traditional, so I know he will be honored with this,” Bohon said. “Hopefully, I will have the opportunity of having her with me for the rest of my life. She is truly a blessing.”
Meanwhile, others have plans of keeping a tradition alive in the community.
“During the summer, I will be teaching and building up the swing scene here in Fort Worth,” student Ryan Wheeler said. “We will hold dances, lessons and excursions to preserve the music and dances of the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s.”
Wheeler and some of his friends are currently looking for a dance studio in Fort Worth, where they can hold their lessons and other events.
“I really want to bring back the music of that time and reintroduce it to the younger generations of today,” he said. “The music back then was so brilliant, and people have forgotten or don’t realize it.”
Other students plan on boosting their career and academic plans with coursework during the summer while taking an interesting job on the side.
“I will be attending an internship at a ministry, and I will take at least one class at TCC,” Eladia Mosqueda said. “I will also probably get a graveyard-shift job.”
Faculty enjoy having time off as well, and philosophy professor Hap Lyda has some desires of his own.
“My wife and I really haven’t planned anything yet, but I do intend to tour mid-America, especially Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland,” he said. “I want to drive by a few notable universities and churches and gather more information for my courses.”
