Thirty universities will recruit students during Transfer Connections Week on TR Campus Oct. 22-25.
Students will find out how much they know about the university of their choice after participating in a speed-recruiting event. The universities will set up tables for students to spend about five minutes with each recruiter to gather the information they want about transfer opportunities.
Each day, a handful of universities will be available. If students visit with all universities present that day, they become eligible for a daily prize drawing and also for a grand prize drawing for a Google Nexus 7 tablet. If students attend the event all four days and visit all tables, they will have four entries in the grand prize, which will be drawn at the end of the week.
“The goal of having so many recruiters here is to give students information and help them in their planning process and network with recruiters so that they can plan for their transfers,” said TR academic advisor Sharon Moore.
“Don’t wait till the last minute,” said Louann Schulze, TR director of counseling.
Schulze said the event is a part of this semester’s Commit to Complete initiative on TR Campus.
“It is the district’s goal for students to complete a certificate or degree,” she said. “The actual term C2C [Commit to Complete] came up last year, initiated by the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. So many students don’t see the value or even sometimes know that they can complete a degree here. Their goal is to move on to another school. We want to support that, of course, but we want them to be completers here first.”
Schulze outlined a common scenario. When students return to college for their bachelor’s degrees, she said, depending on what’s happening in their lives, it may take another five years and sometimes more before they can complete a degree.
Schulze said having at least an associate degree under their belt simply means having that extra something to put down on their résumé, which could make a difference.
“That might give them a promotion or give them some type of recognition because it is going to take a while to get that next degree,” she said.
Students can participate in the event 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at TRTR Main Street. The faculty plans for a master of ceremonies to help draw students into the event. Universities participating in the event include the University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington, Southern Methodist University and Texas Christian University.
