The annual NW Creative Voice Symposium is the American Idol for scholars, said NW dance associate professor Kim Jackson.
Jackson, who founded the seminar in 2009, believes education can be presented in a personal way.
“I teach dance, and in dance, the way you show you’ve learned is through performance,” she said. “Why shouldn’t we do the same thing in other classes?”
The symposium is Nov. 12-15 and combines the performances of dance and presentations by humanities students.
“These projects are very personal and do not just deal with their grade but their future,” she said. “We want to really demonstrate that what you learn in class will apply to your life.”
The project has had great support this year and is a department push for the humanities division, Jackson said.
“It celebrates creativity and is a different academic experience,” she said. “Students should come to get excited and see what’s possible if they took the class. If students feel their education isn’t valuable, we can show them how it can be.”
Dance presentations for the seminar include Zumba with Reginald Peters Nov. 12, Modern Dance Technique with BODYART Dance Company Nov. 14 and Modern Dance Technique with Michelle Gibson featuring musical accompaniment by Adrian Cook Nov. 15. All dance performances take place 2-3:20 p.m. in WHPE 1103.
The presentation, When Fire Meets Glacier, with poets Will Richey and Alejandro Perez Jr. is 12:30-1:50 p.m. and 2-3:20 p.m. Nov. 13 in the theater lobby (first floor of WTLO).
Other student presentations are in two sessions: 9:30-10:50 a.m. and 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m. on Nov. 14 in WSTU 1303/1305 and on Nov. 15 in the Michael Saenz Conference Center (WACB 1123). A luncheon and keynote address will be held both days from 12:30-1:50 p.m.
Admission is free, but because of limited space, reservations are recommended.
