Former Olympian and motivational speaker Hollis Conway will talk with SE Campus students at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 3 in the North Ballroom.
Conway was ranked No. 1 nationally in the high jump 1988-1994 and No. 1 in the world 1990-1991 in the high jump.
Conway won 10 U.S. high jump titles before retiring in 2000. Conway won a silver medal in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea; a bronze medal in the 1991 Tokyo World Championships; and a gold medal in the 1991 World Indoor Championships in Seville, Spain.
Conway said it would be appropriate to talk to students during Black History Month.
“I want people to create history for themselves,” he said. “I want people to fulfill their own potential and show what it takes to create your own history.”
SE academic advisor Cyrus Crosby, who attended Louisiana State University with Conway and was in the same fraternity, said Conway is the most humble athlete he’s met.
“Hollis is one of the best guys you’ll ever meet,” he said. “It’s great to see an athlete of his caliber take time with people. You’d never know he was an Olympian. He doesn’t talk about it. He’s more interested in what’s going on now.”
