Five members of the NE Campus speech and debate team brought home awards from the Phi Rho Pi regional tournament in Tyler, Texas, March 7-9.
Alex Alatorre was fourth in informative speaking and sixth in persuasive speaking.
Sixth-place awards also went to Zeke Branim in prose interpretation, Lola Obe in programmed oral interpretation and Peter Salas in extemporaneous speaking. Dana Renken placed fifth in impromptu speaking.
“The students have worked very hard, and we are all very proud of them,” said debate team coach Lisa Benedetti.
Alatorre was also pleased with the team’s accomplishments.
“We have done a lot this year, and I’m impressed with how far we’ve come,” said Alatorre, team president. “This was all our first year, and we have done a lot.”
The team will head next to Schaumburg, Ill., in April to compete in the Phi Rho Pi national tournament.
