Students interested in learning the do’s and don’ts of résumé writing and job interviewing can attend the upcoming workshop noon-1 p.m. April 21 in TRTR 3102.
The workshop will offer students tips for turning a successful résumé into an interview along with ideas on how to dress for and prepare for the interview, said Kristin Vinson, coordinator of career and employment services.
“My seminar is focused on making sure I teach them the appropriate way to have a résumé, and once you have your information on your résumé, let’s talk about yourself,” she said.
“Let’s have a 30-second elevator speech that says who you are, what type of position you’re interested in obtaining and what is your overall focus on your career.”
Vinson stressed the importance of students being prepared and having something substantial to say about who they are and what they’re looking for.
Having a general understanding and general practice on what they’re going to say is very important, she said.
“Practice makes perfect and that rule still applies in 2010,” she added.
Some students don’t understand the importance of dressing the part, Vinson said.
She recalled seeing the majority of students in jeans at a previous job fair on TR Campus.
“The seminar is more than just résumés,” she said. “It’s also on dressing professionally and entering the business community.”
She plans on choosing some members of the crowd for a mock interview at the event.
“You should be prepared to talk about your résumé,” she said. “They shouldn’t ask you a question and you’re scanning it saying, ‘Oh yeah, I did put that down there!’”
