Students readying for gym

The gym on the South Campus has been closed down for security issues for almost a month although it was scheduled to reopen Monday.

During that time, students have been unsure what they will do instead of going to the gym.

“ A lot of people like to play basketball. Now they just lift weights,” Demeatrius R., South Campus student said.

Supposedly, gang slang like “cuz” and “blood” were being shouted during the friendly basketball games, Demeatrius said.

“ The administration took it too serious, but everybody was just playing. Everybody is actually friends,” he said.

Dr. Ernest L. Thomas, South Campus president, has asked Vice President Juan Garcia to work with a team of South Campus personnel to try to alleviate the situation.

“ Security issues needed to be addressed, and until they are addressed, [the gym] will not be opened,” Thomas said.

Garcia was assisted by Tim Johnson, Anita Barrett, Lt. Terry Moak and Sgt. Francis McGowen in solving the matter.

Lately students have been going to the pool, but some feared being kicked out of there, too, Demeatrius said.

Thomas said, “I support students going to the gym, but safety’s first.”

Students were hoping the gym will be opened by summer, but Garcia offered them good news last week.

He said Friday the security issues have been solved and the gym was to reopen April 30.
