Bergen Hart defeated Matthew Delaney 6-0 in the intramural tennis tournament on NW Campus Sept 24.
The tournament began with 11 competitors in a single-elimination competition. Within each match, the first person to win six games within the set would move on to the next round. The final match came down to Hart and Delaney.
In a final match that lasted 19 minutes, Hart became the winner.
“I feel pretty good,” he said. “My day’s over now. I get to go home.”
Delaney gave credit to Hart’s abilities.
“Regardless of the outcome, I thought it went well,” he said. “I give him credit. He’s a great player. Kudos to him.”
The two players went through a series of prelims and semifinals that occurred over a span of three hours prior to the match.
Delaney’s semifinal lasted an hour and a half with him narrowly winning, 6-4.
“I’ve been playing tennis almost four years now,” he said. “My goal is to be a professional tennis player, so I play with my heart and soul at every chance I get.”
Hart, a more seasoned competitor with 23 years of experience, swept both his prelim and semifinal, 6-0.
When asked why he signed up for the tournament, Hart said he “thought why not give it a shot, see who’s playing and have some fun with it.”
