Fairgoers flock to classic favorites, new attractions

The State Fair of Texas’ 128th annual celebration of state pride is underway with the theme “Deep in the Heart of Texas.”

The fair held in Dallas’ Fair Park features live music, auto shows, cowboys and the 55-foot tall Big Tex statue.

Texas loves its artery-clogging edibles, and the ever-popular Big Tex Taste Awards’ fried food competition proves that.

This year’s best-tasting winner created a Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil, but past winners have been as bizarre as fried bubblegum or fried Coke. Attendees this year can enjoy fried Sriracha balls or deep-fried milk and cookies on a stick — all in the spirit of Texas.

Other activities include pig races, a petting zoo, a butter sculpture, the nightly Starlight Parade and rides on the iconic Texas Star Ferris wheel. Live performances, exhibits and educational programs can also be found within the fair, which ends Oct. 19.
