NW to offer Moot Court Camp

By Robert Young/ Reporter

The NW Campus Pre-Law Club will sponsor a Moot Court Debate Boot Camp 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 2

Pre-law adviser Julie Lantrip and speech instructor Tamar Artin will lead the training and practice rounds to prepare students for debate competitions held in the spring.

The boot camp is open to all students interested in competing in the debate competitions, Lantrip said.

“It is ideal for pre-law students, but the challenging research, argumentation and speaking skills that students gain are useful for a wide variety of fields,” she said.

The camp will include a demonstration and Q&A session with a fellow university team, whose names will be announced at a later date.

Lantrip said one of the challenges of moot court is that judges act like Supreme Court justices and ask questions to the speakers about their arguments.

“[This] requires students to know their own arguments and to be able to think on their feet when asked to defend their positions,” she said.

After the boot camp, team members will complete outlines over the winter break and then will be scheduled for an intensive practice before the competition.

Students are asked to RSVP to julie.lantrip@tccd.edu or zoyee.mestousis@my.tccd.edu for the camp as lunch will be provided.
