Latino students will be honored and recognized during a variety of activities at the ninth Abrazando al Exito districtwide Hispanic Heritage Month celebration Oct. 9 on South Campus.

The event takes place 4-8 p.m. in SSTU 1114 and will include a silent auction, banquet, art exhibit, guest speaker and two workshops. Visit http://bit.ly/2whL0nv to RSVP, which is required to attend.

Intercultural student engagement and academic success will host workshops from 4 to 5 p.m. in the SSTU Forum Room. One workshop leader will discuss scholarships and how to hunt for them when getting ready to transfer, South student support coordinator Belinda Lopez said.

“It’s really good time to just come together to learn about the culture and mainly celebrate our students,” Lopez said.

A silent auction takes place 5-6 p.m in the student center lobby where attendees can bid on different baskets with items such as TCC-related items or wine, South special projects coordinator Yolanda Sifuentes said.

“I think definitely there is an opportunity for learning about cultural awareness,” she said.

The banquet will run 6-8 p.m. where scholarships will be awarded to students, and Mariela A. Rodriguez, University of Texas at San Antonio graduate school associate dean, will speak.

The Mujeres Poderosas: Legacy of Strong Latinas in Fort Worth exhibit will open during the event and remain up on South for a few weeks, Lopez said. The exhibit features still photography by photojournalist Beatriz Terrazas.

“I think it’s really important that people attend not just to learn about our culture but just to interact with other people to build a network across districts because it’s a district event,” Lopez said.
