NW holiday choir concert features variety of genres

The NW music department will present a student fall choir concert Nov. 29. With a Christmas theme, the concert will combine a sample of songs from different genres and levels of skill.

Since the beginning of the semester, the choir has practiced songs handpicked by instructor and director Patricia Bedford.

Of course, every student has his/her own favorite, many enjoying “Alleluia” by Randall Thompson.

First soprano Chellicee Cloud said she enjoys the sound of the song and the obstacles the choir faces performing the piece.

“It is the most gorgeous piece of music I think I’ve ever sang in my entire life,” she said. “I am so blessed that she [Bedford] picked that one.”

Tenor Noah Thompson said the pieces are special to him and students would enjoy the concert because of how emotional the songs can be.

“The kind of music that is going to be sung and performed is very powerful,” he said. “As I’m singing it, some of the songs are actually emotionally moving for me, like ‘Merry Christmas, Darling.’ The first time we sang that, I had to control myself because that song is just so delightful.”

Alexander Baumann from the bass section joked that he hopes the audience’s initial reaction is “Hey, they didn’t screw up!” Baumann said he thinks the audience will enjoy the concert because the students are not just singing for a grade but to entertain as well.

”I mean, we’re here to entertain people and to learn ourselves,” he said. “So I think the real goal is to expose us to a variety of music and still sound good while we’re doing it.”

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall (WFAB 1105). Admission is free. For more information, email Bedford at patricia.bedford@tccd.edu.
