SE Campus will unveil the third edition of The Compass, its literary magazine, 6-8 p.m. Sept. 25 in the library.
The magazine is a compilation of literature and art produced by SE students, faculty and staff.
“It’s very exciting to see what the participants come up with,” said Pennie Boyett, English instructor and the publication’s faculty adviser.
The 2012 publication, including a DVD, will be on sale for $12, and the 2010 and 2011 editions can be purchased for $5 each.
“The process for selecting the work published is led solely by the students,” Boyett said. “The students selecting potential work to be published do not know the identity of the individuals who submitted.”
Boyett said her goal has been to incorporate work from campus areas that may not be thought of right away as having artistic characteristics. This year’s publication, for instance, features artwork from the culinary arts and architecture departments, she said.
Additionally, the upcoming edition will have a new logo on the cover.
Last fall, instructor Talia Dancer’s class formed marketing agencies, and each agency presented a proposal, Boyett said. The logo came from one of the teams from that class.
Boyett plans to take the publication online and is working with the computer science department to do so.
In the past, a student organization produced The Compass, but Boyett said she has found that incorporating other departments has showcased more of the creativity of the campus and students.
“It’s most enjoyable working with the students and seeing the overwhelming talent and creativity,” she said.
