Latonia Vaughn’s radio production students visited the Cumulus Media Network Dec. 4.

The radio-television–broadcast instructor said such field trips expose her students to professionals who work in the field where they hope to find employment.

“It will put them in front of people that will hire them,” she said.

Program directors, engineers and production personnel give students an insight to what it means to be successful in the field of media, Vaughn said.

The advantage of a media network such as Cumulus is that it is not narrow like a single radio station, Cumulus offers country, rock, hip-hop and talk radio.  It offers a variety of genres and formats, which allows students to pursue a genre that fits or intrigues them.

From her experience as a prime-time disc jockey for the No. 1 station in the No. 8 market, she believes taking the class is only the first step. To reach full potential, students must learn to advertise themselves in front of the right people. Networking is a skill learned by having professional conversations with people who work in the field and hold positions students hope to one day hold also, Vaughn said.
