More than a dozen students came to show off their moves in the So You Think You Can’t Dance workshop Sept. 15on NW Campus.
After a few words on dancing and a little motivation, NW associate professor of dance Lacreacia Sanders told students to take off their shoes and get out on the floor.
Twelve-foot mirrors surrounded the studio, and hesitation set in.
“No one is watching you but yourself,” Sanders said.
The music started playing, and the room stayed still until Sanders said she needed to see dancing.
Sanders told the students that she didn’t care what was done as long as there was movement.
It’s hard to remember moves, so for beginners, it’s easy to come up with names like drag and pop, Sanders said.
Students learned how to do dances like the Wobble and the Cupid Shuffle.
NW student Julia Kevelighan said her interest in dance brought her to the workshop, which ended with a Soul Train line.
By this time, no one cared who was watching.
Everyone clapped and cheered while others showed their new moves.
