Caroline Herring Lantana (3.5 stars)
Caroline Herring’s new CD, Lantana, shows great promise for the folk singer, but only in a few tracks.
Not good enough to buy the album, the best track “Paper Gown” is definitely worth a download.
“Paper Gown” is a dark folk song about a mother drowning her children. Her songwriting isn’t Bob Dylan’s, but the track is strong and poignant.
The song is the best example of her songwriting.
The rest of Lantana is OK, but a slight disappointment after hearing “Paper Gown.”
“Song for Fay” is too repetitive for comfort, and “All the Pretty Horses” is two degrees away from being a phenomenal song.
Vocally, Lantana isn’t really impressive, but her lyrics are top notch.
