As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, an interactive question-and-answer session about Diez y Seis, Mexican Independence Day, will be presented Sept. 16 in the SE Campus North Ballroom.
University of Texas at Arlington history professor Walter Richmond will speak and a dance performance by El Patio Flamenco will follow.
The educational celebration will be held 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. and is sponsored by student activities.
Student development associate Amy Staley said Richmond, a returning guest speaker for SE, knows a lot about Spain and Mexico.
“He has done it for us before,” she said. “And we know he will do a good job.”
Staley said she thinks the event will broaden students’ understanding of Mexican culture and maybe provide them with a new experience as well.
“They may be able to learn how to dance the Flamenco,” she said.
David Quintana and Isabel Clavel will perform the flamenco dance. The duo formed El Patio Flamenco because of their love of Spain and the entertaining art of flamenco.
Also scheduled Oct. 5 and 8 for SE’s recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month are workshops conducted by Dr. Juan Araujo, assistant professor from the University of North Texas at Dallas, on ways to explore one’s culture.
