If students have ever wondered what life would be like without sound, they’ll be able to find out.
Multiple TR Campus programs are putting together It’s a Deaf, Deaf World, a deaf immersion experience, to be held 1-4 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Idea Store on TR Campus. Participating programs include disability support services, the center for community engagement and TR’s sign language interpreting program.
Sign language instructor Allison Randolph said stations representing everyday life will be set up for and run by deaf students and deaf volunteers from the community. Students will be given communication-oriented tasks for which they will not be allowed to speak or write. Stations include a bank, a library, a classroom, a jail, a lounge area, a movie theater, a church and a pharmacy.
Additionally, the presenters will hold blind-deaf simulations in which students must wear blindfolds in addition to being unable to hear anything.
“It’s kind of a walk-in-their-shoes type of experience,” Randolph said.
Students may call Laura Escamilla at 817-515-1194 for more information.
