The NW campus ballroom dance class and dance club will host its first Dancing with the TCC Stars competition at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in WSTU 1303/1305.
Using a on a scale from one to 10, a panel of three judges will evaluate and score dances by 11 couples composed of TCC students and faculty members.
After each couple performs a minute-and-a-half routine, the judges will provide a score and verbal feedback.
The audience, however, will have the ultimate vote, and the judges can only try to influence the audience through their comments.
This will be the first semester that NW’s ballroom dance class and dance club will host the competition. Participants will perform various types of ballroom dance including the cha-cha, tango, rumba, waltz, swing and fox trot.
Dancing with the TCC Stars is not only a competition for students, but donations will be accepted to raise funds for Tarrant County’s Assessment Center, a sort of half way house for abused or neglected children.
Every year, the NW Dance Club collects donations to buy Christmas gifts for children at the Assessment Center.
Amy Sleigh, dance associate professor, choreographed nine of the 11 routines and said everyone participating is excited about the competition.
NW student Andrew Gern, who teaches at DanceMakers studio in Fort Worth, choreographed one of the dances.
NW dance associate professor Kim Jackson, who will compete Wednesday, choreographed her own tango routine.
NW staffers Rebecca Staats, Gary Goodwin and Alex Chrestopoulus will serve as judges to critique the performances.
After the actual competition, students and staff are invited to an open dance floor 1:30-3:30 p.m.
