A new college success course will provide students skills on how to succeed in their studies.
TCCD is now obligated to make incoming college students who do not pass at least two portions of the Accuplacer test, to enroll in a mandatory college success class.
Listed as STSC 0111, Transition to College Success is offered on every campus.
In the eight-week, one-hour class, students will learn lessons like time management, research skills, goal setting and career and education planning. Other topics are built into the curriculum.
Psychology instructor Kristin Byrd will teach one of several sections on NE Campus.
“Most first-time college students don’t typically grasp what it takes to be successful in college,” she said. “So their success can be limited until they learn how to manage other things in their lives. I am confident and hopeful that this class will offer the skills needed for these students to succeed.”
NE vice president for student development services Magdalena de la Teja said she hopes students who did not meet the satisfactory requirements for the Accuplacer will complete their developmental classes right away.
“Our goal is to encourage students to take developmental education classes in their first semester so that they are ready for college-level classes as soon as possible and so they can meet their own individual goals,” she said. “Although the new rules are more stringent, we are confident they will help. Research has shown that these types of classes have helped students to be more successful in college.”
