Students attended various workshops on SE Campus for the Student Success Seminars Sept. 13-16.
Topics included campus resources, college cost, ways to get an A, WebAdvisor, health advisement, tips to take good notes, advice on setting goals and keeping punctual, test preparation and transfer planning.
SE student Tina Montoya said she was ecstatic when she went to see guest speaker Nerissa Knight, a CBS 11 anchor.
“I was so excited that I got a chance to see her in person,” she said. “She gave some great advice too, so it was worth it.”
The Navigating WebAdvisor and CampusCruiser seminar aimed to help students who have a hard time with the two web-based programs. SE assistant professor Ernest Gines presented the seminar and touched on what WebAdvisor and CampusCruiser can help students do.
“The purpose of it is to have a faster way for students to keep track of their status,” he said. “Students can use WebAdvisor to keep an eye on their degree plan or keep status on financial aid. It’s just not for choosing your core classes.”
SE associate professor of sociology Garrison Henderson presented the session The Best Way to an A — Know Your Learning Style.
Henderson said that students have different learning styles and habits.
“There are three types of learners: visual learners, kinesthetic and auditory learners,” he said. “Some students have to see the subject in order to learn, and some students can just listen to an instructor and know what to do.”
SE student Shane Anthony said the seminars helped him get to know the campus better.
“I’m a freshman, so I didn’t really understand how a lot of things work around here,” he said.
