TR students learned to find their way through the maze of college during the Sept. 15 academic success center’s lunchtime workshop.

“Go confidently in the directions of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined,” TCC academic advisor Kiesha Harvey said.

In Navigating College, Harvey spoke about academic issues such as majors, courses and graduation requirements.

Riverfront Café provided pizza and drinks as Harvey handed out copies of her slideshow and a general information sheet for note taking.

Harvey’s slideshow provided details on gaining initiative and enhancing study skills as well as information on types of college degrees and transfer requirements.

“College is America, and this is an opportunity to build your skills,” she said.

Harvey urged students to take their time and do it right. She also introduced TCC’s new policy on developmental courses, which requires semi-weekly visitations to academic advisors

All new students must enroll in developmental coursework [if needed] each semester until eligible for college-level classes,” she said.

Harvey also told students to take advantage of campus resources like workshops and career assessments.

One student said he walked away with new information.

“You know everything about transferring, studying and meeting with counselors,” TR student David Kromah said.

When asked what students should get out of the speech, Harvey offered one piece of advice.

“Take advantage and reach out. Don’t be afraid to ask — we’re here to help,” she said.
