Edwardo Perez, NE English assistant professor, and his wife Suzanne Perez, NE art instructor, will present the Hispanic Art and Music Event Oct. 4 on NE Campus.
Suzanne Perez will discuss the depiction of the Virgin Mary in art and music. She will cover the differences between the portrayal of the Virgin Mary in Spanish art and in Mexican art.
Edwardo Perez and Glori Vela, music instructor, have composed their own version of “Ave Maria” with lyrics sung in Spanish by Jennifer Manuel.
He will discuss the Virgin Mary’s portrayal in music. Perez plans to cover the differences among similar prayers and covers of the prayer by different artists. The duo’s version will be performed by a soprano string quartet.
Perez said he hopes students and faculty will be educated on how an idea can bounce from artist to artist over the years and that it can cross from music to art.
“Being a teacher, I always hope that they [students] learn something from my lectures,” he said.
Suzanne Perez will speak 11 a.m.-noon, followed by the new “Ave Maria” noon-1 p.m. in NSTU Center Corner.
