Students learned to save time and frustration at the library during the Easy Research Workshop on TR Campus Sept. 22.
Danelle Ellis, assistant director of library services, said she presented the workshop so students could learn about available resources.
“If it takes more than 15 minutes to find what you’re looking for, go find a librarian,” she said. “If it takes more than an hour, you’re doing it all wrong.”
Ellis said the TCC system of libraries is a great tool to help students conduct research — students have access to multiple databases, catalogs and articles.
And the library is available online, too. The workshop showed students how to navigate the updated online library and how to conduct web research.
Ellis said it is important to know how to distinguish between an article and a website, how to cite the different sources and where to locate source-citing tools online.
Students also learned how to evaluate Web sources to ensure they receive the right information.
“It’s nice to learn how to correctly do the research,” said TR student Michael Brubaker.
Ellis also pointed out the TCC Ask a Librarian link, where students can ask questions at any time and place.
“We want students to know how to use the right tools at the right time, the right way,” Ellis said.
Students will have the opportunity to attend three more Easy Research Workshops from 2-5 p.m. Sept. 30, 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 16 and 12:30-3:30 p.m. Oct. 23 on TR Campus.
Students who attend these workshops will earn information literacy certificates.
