TR workshop highlights benefits of setting goals

Students on TR Campus attended a workshop Sept. 28 designed to help them set and achieve their goals.

TR counselor Jeronimo Aviles instructed students on how to outline goals and provided steps they can take to achieve them in the Setting Goals workshop.

He focused on three habits students can develop to achieve goals. The first habit listed was “proactivity,” which Aviles said is the habit of attitude.

He said students should be responsible for their actions and proactive in achieving goals.

The “end in mind” habit is leadership — when students set a goal, they should think about the final results, Aviles said.

“Visualize and create a mental image of what you want to create and achieve,” he said.

The last habit, “putting first things first,” taught students about management. Aviles said students need to prioritize what is most important to them and to operate every day from priorities established in their mission as well as the roles and goals they established.

Aviles taught students how to break down their goals and to make them more manageable. He said students need to separate issues into what’s important, what’s urgent and what’s an emergency.

“We make things that are not important, urgent,” he said. “And a lot of us need to check our priorities.”

Aviles said he wanted to help students prepare for challenges, find directions and stay in the leader mindset.

“If you aren’t willing to be honest with yourself where you are right now, then you are not going to achieve your goals,” he said.

Student Antonio Anderson found some of the tips Aviles gave helpful. Anderson said he had been a reactive student up until this point, and he wants to work on implementing the skills he learned in the session.

“A lot of students focus on what they can’t do instead of what they can,” Aviles said. “In order to achieve what you want, you must take responsibility.”
