The dual efforts of South Campus student development coordinator Jason Wallace and Dr. Cyrus Johnson, director of student activities, have seen the resurrection of South’s student government organization.
“This is the first time in a long time that student government has taken place at any campus,” Johnson said at the Oct. 1 nomination meeting. “Other campuses are looking at us as a sort of pilot.”
Wallace and Johnson, who both came to South Campus within the last year, decided to restart the student government after being approached by campus President Ernest Thomas.
“He has always wanted it to be a viable entity,” Johnson said. “Student government represents a system of checks and balances for student clubs and organizations. We want to see the student government on campus. What better way to represent the students?”
Those who attended the meeting were either delegates of clubs such as Health Science, Jazz and Philosophy or students who just had an interest in government and wanted to participate in the association.
During the meeting, Wallace told students some of the positive things about getting involved in student government, such as it’s a résumé builder.
He also covered the requirements that students would have to meet to run for an office, including a 2.7 GPA and completion of a minimum of six hours at TCC.
He listed the different offices that would need filling such as president, vice president and treasurer.
During the meeting, the attendees were allowed to nominate themselves or others for these offices. By the end of the meeting, nominees had been chosen for each office.
Wallace then laid out some rules for the election. He said one important rule was “No mudslinging.”
As the meeting wound down, Wallace said meeting days for the Student Government Association would be assigned after the election.
Voting days will be Nov. 2-3. On Nov. 5, the decisions will be announced.
Health Science Club president Bonnie Dixon attended the meeting as the club’s delegate.
“I believe SGA is trying to instill leadership skills into the current college students, which will benefit them in the long run as they pursue academic success,” Dixon said.
