Cindy Mask, a surgical technology instructor on NE Campus, started a community service project in 2005, called gLOVE. Five years later, she said the project has made a much larger impact.
“We are gloving the community,” she said.
The objective is to collect as many gloves, mittens, hats and scarves as possible. The first year yielded 500 items. Last year, 2,500 articles were collected. This year, the goal is 4,000.
Donnie Braziel, associate professor of surgical technology on NE Campus, said he is a proud supporter of gLOVE.
“Last year, I personally gave over $60 worth of children’s gloves, caps and scarves and plan to do so again,” he said.
Monetary donations are also accepted, and all the proceeds benefit SafeHaven of Tarrant County, a women’s shelter and support center. Valerie Salter, events coordinator for SafeHaven, remembers how the relationship with gLOVE started.
“Cindy called and passionately explained the program. I appreciate any community support,” she said.
From then on, the surgical department has made contributions to the organization.
The library will be the primary location for donations this year, but fliers and boxes will be located throughout campus. Collections run from Oct. 25 to Nov. 19.
“Never underestimate the power of a warm article of clothing,” Salter said.
