After three weeks of flag football games, NE Campus crowned a perfect champion Nov. 6.
The Knights, who did not lose a game, are set to represent NE in the districtwide Directors’ Cup Nov. 20 on South Campus.
“It’s pretty awesome,” Knights player and NE student Steven Radcliff said, following his team’s 34-25 victory over the Untouchables. “This is my first time playing football here at TCC, but it’s been really competitive.”
Despite his being a first-timer to TCC football, Radcliff said he’s been playing football for years and plans to try out for the University of North Texas football team next year after transferring.
In one of three games played, the Untouchables made it to the NE championship game with a win over Swag Attack, 26-12. Prior to that in the consolation bracket, the Gymrats were awarded a forfeit win over To Be Decided, when the latter team was late to the field.
While NE intramural director Bart Desender was pleased with this year’s flag football season, he said he plans on being stricter about teams showing up on time and players making roster moves.
“That was the main issue this year,” Desender said. “Next year, I’m simply going to say, ‘If you don’t show up, you forfeit.’ It will just make everything go smoother.”
As TCC looks to the Directors’ Cup, the annual flag football tournament between the winners on NE, SE, NW and South campuses, both players and Desender immediately cited South as a campus they think should provide stiff competition.
“South is supposed to always have a really good team,” Radcliff said. “We’ve been hearing that they are big and fast and played a lot before.”
Desender provided similar analysis after citing previous South Campus teams.
“The players on South always seem to be good because they know exactly how to play flag football, not just football,” he said. “Coach [and South intramural director Mike Daniels] has been teaching and coaching sports for a long time, so I’m sure his campus will again have a tough team.”
