TR Campus will have a domestic violence presentation Nov. 18 as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The open forum seminar will have a panel of professionals answer questions about psychological, emotional, physical, sexual and verbal abuse.
Dr. Arrick Jackson, divisional dean of NW public services and social and behavioral science, will moderate and be joined by Jeronimo Aviles, TR psychology counselor; Mark Evans, TR psychology professor; Anna Cruz, Safe Haven of Tarrant County board member; and TCC police officer Rose Brant, district victims services assistant coordinator.
Jackson said the forum is part of an educational outreach designed by TR health services coordinator Veronica Warrior as she felt students have a need for this education.
Students should expect to learn what resources are available in the district, he said.
Jackson said he has received many police reports about domestic abuse happening to students at home that spills over into campus life and disrupts their learning.
Jackson said some panelists were victims themselves and use their experiences to show students there is a way out.
Because of sensitivity, disclosure and embarrassment, students could ask individual questions by writing them on a card anonymously.
The panel will show students signs that they could be in an abusive relationship, teach them how to avoid these types of relationships and share experiences and inform them about available resources and counseling to get the help they need.
“Domestic violence impacts one out of every three women,” Jackson said.
“This information can be very beneficial to help find resources or finding a way out of that abuse or the relationship entirely.”
The panel will be 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. in Action A (TRTR 4202). A light lunch will be provided.
