SE team wins flag football tournament, claiming second straight District Cup

After a day of flag football that included a late team and a forfeit, SE Campus’ team won its second straight District Cup championship Nov. 20.

AK, the SE champions led by quarterback Gerome Pruitt, won the tournament by running the table, winning all four games against the other campus winners.

The closest of its matches was a 26-20 win over TR Campus’ team, which ended up finishing in second place.

“Don’t give me all the credit,” Pruitt said. “We’ve got a complete team. And be sure to write Joe Tran’s name down as MVP.”

Tran caught his share of touchdowns throughout the tournament but made his biggest presence felt on defense as he accounted for numerous sacks and quarterback hurries, which helped pressure the other teams into throwing costly interceptions.

Third place went to NE Campus’ team The Knights as they beat TR in the final game to take third place away from South’s Team Savage. It was a controversial third-place decision because of the disappearance of NW Campus’ team.

NW, which slowed down the tournament by being 45 minutes late to its first game, decided not to play its fourth and final game against NE.

Therefore, NE got credit for a 36-0 win since 36 points is the most one can score in a flag football game.

The tournament’s tiebreaker was determined by which team  scored the most points. Since South, NE and TR all finished with a 2-2 record, the 36 points that NE gained from the forfeit helped the team edge out South for third place.

South intramural coordinator Michael Daniels, who organized the tournament, was not too thrilled with NW.

“It’s just pathetic and ridiculous,” he said. “It’s just really low. Low is the best word to describe it. All these other kids come out and play their tails off, and for a team to affect the outcome of a tournament like this is just low.”

The most exciting game of the day came while some people were still crawling out of bed. South and TR put on a show.

It was a back-and-forth game until the last minute, but TR found a way to hold on to the lead it had most of the game and win, 30-28.

South quarterback Richard Allen led the offense with 86 yards passing, 123 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He also added an interception return of 50 yards for a touchdown. But he was still outperformed by TR quarterback Weston Foster, who finished with 224 yards passing and three touchdowns while rushing for another touchdown.

“It’s definitely good to get off to a hot start,” he said.

Flag football intramurals will continue to be a fall sport, but Daniels said there is a small chance of having spring football as well.
