Tucked away deep in a secluded corner of the J. Ardis Bell Library on NE Campus is Anne Drake, the coordinator of the computer learning center.
As the coordinator, Drake works quietly behind-the-scenes spending hours working to ensure students and faculty are prepared and have the tools necessary to succeed in their work.
“I do most of the library instruction for this campus as well,” Drake said. “It may not sound like a lot, but we actually do 200 to 300 classes a year.”
Library instruction is training in computer research using online databases provided by the campus libraries. Students can use the library for research in any subject. If they are not sure where or how to start, the library staff is on hand to assist.
Drake also trains faculty in computer programs and applications to prepare them for class.
Drake said working in the library is an exciting and rewarding experience.
“The different things I get to do, you know, it’s always a challenge everyday and everyday is different,” she said. “I like working with students, and I like working with faculty.”
She has worked in education on NE Campus for 20 years. Education was not her first career choice, but she finds her new career more enjoyable.
“I worked as a draftsman for Texas Industries in Dallas,” she said. “I did drawings for parking garages like at the Galleria [mall].”
Although Drake graduated from school with her mind set in a career in drafting, she soon found the work tiresome and unrewarding.
Drake said the hours were long and often resulted in working 60-70 hours week, so she chose to get out and move into the education field.
The biggest influence in her professional life is her late husband, former South Campus library director Theodore Drake. She came to NE Campus at his urging.
“In fact, he drove me kicking and screaming to apply for a job here [NE Campus],” she said.
Drake said students should never be afraid to ask for help when researching.
“They may think they know how, they should always ask someone who does it for a living,” she said. “It always makes their lives a lot easier.”
Drake sees her flexibility and support as a key to her success with the library and can work with students as well as faculty.
“I never found a barrier. Everything I want to do I was encouraged to do and never came across someone who said, ‘No, you can’t do that,’” she said.
Full-time computer learning center assistant Clint Niosi said her patient, warm personality makes it enjoyable to work with her.
NE Campus Library Director Steven Hagstrom agreed, saying the staff looks to Drake for input in complex decisions. He said her dedication to the job is exceptional.
