Is it solvable?
Is it entertaining?
Does it sparkle?
These are the questions Mary Horowitz (played by Sandra Bullock) in the film All About Steve must answer to do her job creating crossword puzzles just right.
But the problem is she works way too much and her boss tells her to just “be normal.”
But Mary isn’t normal, and that’s what keeps the audience’s interest.
Mary’s parents set her up on a blind date with Steve (played by Bradley Cooper). To follow her boss’s instructions, Mary decides to go through with the date.
When her date comes in the door, she immediately runs back up the stairs.
At this point, the audience discerns Mary is slightly neurotic in that she talks to her hamster, Carol.
She tells Carol how handsome she thinks her date is as she gets into a more risqué outfit.
Soon Steve and Mary get into Steve’s car, and things get even crazier.
Mary’s neurotic persona immediately repels Steve, so he decides he needs to get her out of his car as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, Steve is a nice guy so he unthinkingly tells Mary about his next TV reporting spot and invites her there.
Mary ignorantly takes the invitation as a sign he likes her. From there, she pulls a crazy stunt that gets her fired, leaving her with nothing to do but stalk Steve.
The rest of the movie is full of quirky surprises, and in the end the audience finds that being unique isn’t such a bad thing after all.
The film offers a good message, which makes this movie overall worth watching. Not to mention, the acting was done well.
DJ Qualls, Thomas Haden Church and Ken Jeong also star.
