South Campus students, faculty and staff bowled away their Saturday afternoon to help a local charity.

The group joined Bowling for Kid’s Sake, sponsored by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Fort Worth, Sept. 26 at Cityview Lanes in Fort Worth. Each participant received two free games of bowling along with their shoes.

Several students and staff members from South Campus physical education classes volunteered their time to participate in this event to help raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

This wasn’t the first time on the lanes for Carmen Gomez.

“I started bowling with my brother doing this event,” the South student said. “I would come and watch him, and he would make me bowl with him. He isn’t here today because he is now a student at Texas A&M.”

Ashley Bugardt, South adjunct physical education instructor, worked with students and encouraged everyone to participate and play.

All participants registered for door prizes and a raffle for a basketball autographed by Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks, two floor seats to a Mavericks game and a two-night stay at the Wolf Lodge, a prize valued at $1,800.

Big Brothers Big Sisters staff members encouraged all participants to consider becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister and volunteering their time to help less fortunate children.

South student William Mueller works three to four days a week and attends school five days a week, but he said he enjoyed making time for the event.

“I am glad I can donate to a charitable organization. I hope to be a Big Brother,” he said. “I will be getting an application. I will not be able to be a Big Brother while in school, but it’s something to do in the summer.”

Paul Cogdell, South Campus network administrator, played on the same team with groundskeeper Gary LaBelle and was impressed with his teammate.

“He’s the captain,” Cogdell said. “Gary’s first game score was 212.”

Students from Texas Christian University also participated.
