Modern dance, jazz and hip-hop are among the many dance performances taking place in Mosaic in Motion on NW Campus Oct. 16.
Mosaic Dance Project is a touring company made up of NW Campus students who are selected through auditions and bring dance to the community through performances and classes at local schools and events.
Amy Sleigh, associate professor of dance, choreographed a modern dance trio called “The Bottom Line.” She called the program energetic and movement for movement’s sake.
The work does not have a theme or story line, but Sleigh said the strength of the dancers will stand out in the performance.
“These three dancers are quiet in nature but are fierce when being present in a room and on stage,” she said.
Kim Jackson, associate professor of dance and humanities, choreographed a jazz piece using desks as props and Lacreacia Sanders, associate professor of dance, choreographed a jazz and hip-hop piece.
Sanders said her piece was high-energy, and Jackson’s was fun and sassy.
Four students who are members of Company A have choreographed their own solos for the program.
Company A is a smaller, more advanced company that serves leadership roles in the Mosaic Dance Group.
Stephanie Diaz, NW student and Company A dancer, choreographed a jazz piece to “Black and Gold” by Sam Sparrow.
She said her favorite dance in the show is the contemporary piece.
“It has a sort of gospel theme,” she said. “The words of the song talk about finding light in the dark. It is very spiritual.”
Diaz said she loves the dance program on NW Campus. She plans on getting a degree in dance education or a bachelor of fine arts in dance.
Lynn McCreight, another Company A dancer, choreographed a tap routine to “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas.
Mosaic in Motion will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Theater Northwest (WTLO 1108).
Tickets are $5 for regular admission and $1 with a student ID.
