YWCA, TCC students discuss racial issues

With a mission to help eliminate racism and empower women, YWCA, a multicultural women’s organization, will team up in a panel discussion with a select group of TCC students.

Students from the TR All-Star program and The Leader’s Council will discuss racial issues in Dialogue on Race, as part of YWCA’s racial justice program at the second of four meetings with YWCA facilitator Marcy Paul 3-5 p.m. Nov. 13 at 512 W. Fourth St. in Fort Worth.

The session gives men and women the chance to speak about racial issues in a safe environment while learning about repercussions of prejudice and institutional racism, said the YWCA’s Web site.

In the first meeting, students talked about the differences between prejudice and racism and how the two words were perceived.

“I think some students might have found it a little bit uncomfortable. Well, I wouldn’t even say it was uncomfortable. It’s just crossing boundaries that most people usually don’t voice,” TLC president Amanda Makin said. “I think that it was a very mature conversation and that everybody was able to talk about it normally. I think it went really well.”

She attended the first session and will also attend the second. She said the second meeting will consist of group discussion over readings given to the participants.
