Golden Apples of the Sun, the newest album by Caroline Herring, has 12 songs that all basically sound alike.
She has a somewhat unique soft, almost country-like voice. But it’s not this album’s sound that makes it worth a listen, it’s the lyrics that are so relatable.
“A Little Bit of Mercy” provides a steady guitar beat and talks about what the song title says — a little bit of mercy. “Honey, sometimes you just do the best that you can and I show you a little bit of mercy.”
“The Great Unknown” is one of the better songs on the album simply because of its lyrics. Most of it has a Christian meaning behind it. But with the lyrics “the answer unclear, though written in stone, I am afraid of the great unknown,” it is uniting everyone with the fact that there is a certain unknown in all our lives. Yet this unknown isn’t something we face alone, and we can all make it through. Interestingly, the song is based off a passage in Dante’s Inferno.
Not only does Herring have captivating lyrics, she takes on challenges in more than just vocabulary. In the third song on the album, she sings her own version of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors.”
Herring’s main audience is those who like folk, acoustic and indie music. Golden Apples of the Sun makes her fourth album, so fans have plenty to listen to and, more than likely, more to come.
