Some NW Campus students will spend two days trying to inform, persuade and win trophies.
The fourth annual speech competition will be Nov. 23-24 for all NW Campus students. Speech instructor Carol Hunsberger said in past years, 30 to 40 students have entered persuasive and informative speeches over such topics as Starbucks coffee, patriotism and vegetarianism.
Speech instructors Zach Frohlich and A’Isha Malone started the competition in 2006 for students in their Fundamentals of Speech Communications classes. They received positive feedback from faculty and administrators, so in 2008 they opened it to all students, not just those in speech.
For the competition, students give a three- to six-minute persuasive or informative speech that may include a visual aid. The top three winners from each category move into the final round. The top four finalists will receive trophies and compete in NE Campus’ Speak-a-Rama. This year, students from the public speaking classes will aid in the judging of the preliminary round.
The entry deadline is today. Preliminary rounds are 12:30-2:30 p.m. and finals are noon-2 p.m. in the Michael Saenz Conference Center.
