Counselor to warn students of oral risk

By Mason Prince/reporter

AIDS counselor Curtis Smith will talk Oct. 8 on NE Campus about the dangers of sexually transmitted infections.

Smith has more than five years’ experience as an AIDS counselor and is currently counseling at the AIDS Outreach Center in Fort Worth.

During his presentation More Than Tongue in Cheek: Orally Transmitted Risks of STIs, Smith will discuss the different types of infections that can be transmitted orally, such as syphilis or gonorrhea.

“A lot of students don’t think oral sex is ‘real’ sex and aren’t aware of the risks involved,” Smith said.

He will also talk about some of the ways to prevent transmitting infections, such as wearing a condom and having viral load counts routinely checked.

The lecture is scheduled 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). Pre-registration is required for a free lunch. To register for the event, call 817-515-6056 or go to http://tccdne.volunteerhub.com/Events/Index.
